𝘪'𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 ....  ᖇᗩIᑎᖴOᖇEᔕT ᑕᗩᖴE

Okay, now this is a subject so very near and dear to my heart. Rainforest Café is kind of in a special league of interests for me because it’s one I’ve appreciated for a very long time. The story of this establishments development is also so fantastic, that I believe, it must be shared.

So, in the early 90s Steven Schussler had a vision. A vision of entertainment, good eats, and atmosphere. This prospect was inspired by other chains at the time that had combined dining, retail, and entertainment: think Hard Rock Café, Dave & Busters, and Planet Hollywood. The world he was to create was one of a subject he held near to his heart: Rainforest animals.

At this point, Steven Schussler is a man with experience in sales, as well as refurbishment of old machinery. He previously helped develop a 1950’s themed eatery called “Jukebox Saturday Night” which ended up going bankrupt in 1991 (just before his vision of “rainforest” even began.)

After reaching out to his business contacts, to no avail, he decided to take matters into his own hands and create a rainforest of his own design in his home. His 3000 square ft apartment was cleaned out, and his belonging replaced with the following: a waterfall, a greenhouse of butterflies, boulders and rocks made from concrete, 20 different sound systems, two 600 gallon fish tanks, fog and mist machines, over a dozen life-size animatronic animals (including an alligators, gorillas, and an elephant), 40 tropical birds, two 150-pound tortoises, iguanas, and a baboon that roamed freely, and lastly, a fully stocked replica of a retail store with t-shirts, plushies and other merchandise.

It took 3 years and cost $400k (his entire life savings) to bring his vision to life.

Schussler regularly invited investors and their families over to experience the rainforest personally. After several years of back and forth on the idea, Lyle Bergman organized a fundraising round, and put in $1.2 m.

The first location opened October 1994 in Bloomington, Minnesota, at the Mall of America, after 1.5 years of building. It cost $1k per square foot (about 5x a normal restaurant build) and went a million dollars over budget. A single animatronic elephant was said to cost upward of $20k.The live parrots that roamed around had cost upward of $100k/year to feed and care for. There was also the need for animal handers for the living animals involved., as well as a director of operations to run the technical back end.

The efforts paid off, however. In its first year, the restaurant grossed $15m (5-7x the amount a typical chain restaurant – think of TGI Fridays or Olive Garden)

By 2000, however, losses were more noticeable than ever. By September, Rainforest café was sold to a conglomerate for $74m. After the sale, Schussler went on to found Schussler creative, a firm that develops theme restaurants: some being T-Rex Café, Yak & Yeti, and The Boathouse.

These days, Rainforest café looks pretty different. What was once 60 restaurants nationwide, are now just 16 remaining. Aspects like fish tanks and mist machines have slowly been phased out of many locations.

I know this kind of wraps up on kind of a sad note :( I didn’t want to spend too much time talking about their decline, because I don’t think we should let that distract from everything Rainforest Café truly is. From its conception, the commitment that went into every aspect is worth acknowledging. It was built on so much dedication and defied so many odds just to become a reality- let alone gain success for as long as it did. Lest we forget that there are still locations in existence! It’s an anomaly. It’s special, larger than life, kitsch, and at its heart, a total passion project. I think that’s beautiful.

Materials needed:

  • 3 pipe cleaners
  • Something to use as eyes (I used individual sequins, but beads, buttons, or even a sharpie can be used for this too :)
  • Scissors (recommended but not required)

1.) Wrap the end of a pipe cleaner around a marker 2-3 times. You now have this little double loop!

Split the loop open so you have what looks like binoculars

2.) Wrap the long, straight appendage around the center of the binoculars, as well as around the 2 circles on either side.

3.) Once you’ve wrapped the remainder of the pipe cleaner, gently squeeze the two circles to shape them into cat ears.

4.) Then, with a second pipe cleaner, wrap the remainder of the head until there are no exposed spots, leaving an extra little length of straight pipe cleaner.

*At this point you should have a cat head with a little extra length!*

5.) With your third pipe cleaner, create what looks like an upper case “H” with a tail. This 'H' is going to be the limbs and body, so you can adjust them as you see fit. I usually make the 2 parallel lines about the length of half a finger.

6.) Wrap that extra bit of pipe cleaner around the H shape (stop when the remainder hanging off is your ideal tail length). Now you can bend the limbs downward so your cat can stand!

7.) Then, take your cat head (+neck) and your cat body and overlap them like this. Now, wrap the excess pipe cleaner neck around the torso and arms of the body. Now head and body are one!

8.) At this point you’ve got the base of your cat! I like to adjust the head and body into my desired shape. I also sometimes like to use scissors to trim excess fur to give the cat’s features more shape (specifically the ears).

9.) Lastly, for the eyes, I’ll be using e6000 to glue on 2 little sequins for the eyes <3

"When a scout hornet is detected, hundreds of Japanese honeybees swarm the invader, completely engulfing it to form a dense ball. The bees inside vibrate their flight muscles in unison, and this collective vibration rapidly generates heat. This raises the temperature at the core of the bee ball to approximately 46-47°C (115-117°F), a temperature just above the lethal limit for the hornet."
